Am I Eligible for Solar Power Rebates or Grants?

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 9:00am

As you might already know, solar power is an environmentally friendly option. Generating solar power does not use fossil fuels, which are a limited resource whose use has been implicated as one of the leading causes of global warming. By contrast, solar panels are virtually maintenance-free and long-lasting, allowing you to generate your own renewable energy for many years to come.

Continuously rising electric costs also make solar power a financially smart choice. Once your equipment is installed, you can enjoy abundant energy at no charge. Even if you do not install a large system, you probably already know that generating some of your own power puts real dollars back in your pocket each month.

What you might not know, however, is that approximately 1 percent of Australia’s power is already drawn by solar panels, and this number is expected to grow rapidly. One of the main reasons for this trend is that the Australian government provides multiple incentives in the form of money-saving schemes for customers who choose solar power. From individual homes to large companies, everyone can benefit from switching to solar energy.

1. Residential Customers

Under the government program for individual homeowners, you will receive upfront Solar Credits for up to 100 kilowatts of solar capacity you install. Adding further capacity qualifies you for Large Scale Renewable Energy Certificates which are paid to you over 15 years to help reduce the cost of the system. These schemes can significantly offset the price of your new solar energy system.

If you generate more electricity than you need, you will be eligible for feed in tariffs, or money that the state pays you for contributing your excess power to the grid.

2. Small Businesses

Renewable Energy Certificates can save small business owners a great deal of money on equipment installations of up to 100 kilowatts solar capacity. Additional Certificates are available if you choose to add more solar equipment such as a solar hot water system. Like homeowners, small business owners are eligible for feed in tariffs that pay you for any excess energy you contribute to the grid. In addition, solar power installations can offer great tax benefits. Consult with your tax accountant for specific information about your particular tax situation.

3. Major Corporations

If you own a large corporation and install a system of more than 100 kilowatts solar capacity, you may qualify for numerous incentives to make your conversion to solar power more affordable. Large-Scale Generation Certificates, energy efficiency loans, and state funding programs are all possibilities for large businesses interested in switching to solar systems. Ask us for more details on programs that might apply to your business. In addition, even the largest corporations are eligible for feed in tariffs that put money in your pocket for the power that you contribute to the main grid.

4. Off Grid Applications

Living off the grid altogether does not reduce your eligibility for Renewable Energy Certificates and Solar Credits. While you will not qualify for feed in tariffs if you are not connected to the grid, these incentives can help make your move off the grid much more affordable. In addition, staying disconnected from the grid ensures that you will never again receive a monthly power bill. We can set up a battery system that allows you to bank your excess energy and make it available whenever needed.
